Thank you to our sponsors for their generous support!

Formula SAE is a student-run team that designs, fabricates, tests and races an Indy-style race car. Every year in Michigan, more than 120 teams from around the world compete in a number of competitions that challenge driver, car and crew. Incorporating static, dynamic and marketing events, teams are pushed to create a car that performs well, and fits within the competition criteria. [Learn More]

RFSAE FAQ

February 20th, 2009

The Auto Show is in full swing in Toronto right now, and when standing at the booth for a significant amount of time, it’s inevitable that the same questions come up. Here is a sample of the most common questions.

How much horsepower does it have?
The 2008 Ryerson FSAE car develops 70 hp at 12,500 RPM. Constant improvements are made to increase this number, but the team is limited by the 610cc displacement rule. Under unrestricted conditions, the engine develops ~120 HP.

How fast does it go?
The top speed of RF08 is currently around 120 KM/h.

How much does the car weigh?
RF08 weighs in at approximately 460 lbs.

Is that a Yamaha engine?
Yes. RF08 is running a 2007 600cc motorcycle engine out of an R6.

Do you compete against other schools?
The primary purpose of FSAE is to create the fastest, most reliable mini Formula car for mass manufacture. To determine how well the cars compare, there are races around the world against global universities. Races take place in Michigan, California, England and even Germany, with additional races held in other countries. These races generally host more than 100 teams.
